Creating content during a pandemic: tips for shooting safely
I think we can all agree that 2020 has been truly wild. Like, Carole Baskin Tiger King wild. Covid has affected nearly every facet of life and with that we are adapting, doing the best we can with what we have. While photography can be considered more of a luxury service, it is necessary for many to keep their businesses and careers moving forward. So how can we create content safely amidst a pandemic? Check out the tips below to help you plan your next shoot.
1. Set boundaries with your photographer before you book your shoot. Ask about their cancellation policy should one of you test positive for Covid or need to quarantine. Make sure you are on the same page about what you’re cool with so that no one feels uncomfortable on set. Over-communication is key! Also check that they are following your states guidelines—i.e. if you’re planning to shoot inside, is that allowed in your state?
2. Opt for more remote locations! If you know you’ll be shooting in a popular spot in your city or town, shoot early in the morning to avoid coming into contact with others.
3. Have a clear plan of action for the shoot. Map out what you’re shooting/where to help you be as efficient as possible to limit your time together. If you’re planning to travel to multiple locations, figure out the logistics of how that’s happening (all goes back to communicating your comfort levels).
4. Shoot with someone you trust! Things are weird right now, but you can still have fun creating content together! I love to show my clients the back of my camera to give them a glimpse at the magic we’re creating, but that can be a challenge from afar. Alternatively...
5. Bring a trusted (masked) friend! They can act as your stylist, fix your hair, hold your stuff for you + help you change. While this isn’t always feasible, it can be so helpful to have an extra pair of hands.
All of this is to say, have fun + be smart. Use your best judgement! If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to speak up. We’re all navigating this together.
